Engraved trade card for Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory, London, depicting allegorical figures. The same figures are also the subject of a work described in Coade's Gallery, or, Exhibition in artificial stone (1799), pp. [13]-14: "A large panel, 9 feet wide by 10 feet high, modelled from the card of direction to the Manufactory, designed by the late Mr. Bacon. It consists of three figures as large as life. In the centre is a female figure, emblematical of Sculpture and Architecture seated on a pedastal ... on her right is the statue of Time, whose attitude and countenance is finely expressive of dismay and confusion. Opposite to him is an emblematical status of Fire, with her left hand she repulses Time, and her right hand holds a torch ..."
The Father Time pictured on the present trade card is also the subject of a Coade stone sculpture now in the collections of the Yale Center for British Art (Paintings and Sculpture, B2013.14.1). See link herewith. The design for the YCBA sculpture is depicted on leaf [10] of the 1784 trade catalog for Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory. - Subject Terms:
