Notes:
Series of transparent (or transparency) prints published by Rudolph Ackermann, ca. 1799. At about the same time, Ackermann published a pamphlet titled Instructions for painting transparencies, which included at end a 6 page catalog of "Transparencies published by R. Ackermann, no. 101, Strand, June 1, 1800." The catalog lists the titles of 89 transparent prints for sale by Ackermann, together with the price, artist, and engraver of each print. Ackermann published 109 transpaprent prints in the series. Cf. Rickards.
The prints are designed to be displayed in front of a bright light. The back of the print is painted with masses of tones and colors, which combined with bright light from behind, makes the scene on the front of the image transform with vivid lighting effects. Cf. Rickards.
