Manuscript album of 90 rebus puzzles in original watercolor illustrations. The album appears to be the work of at least two artists, probably young girls; they are signed variously by Lottie J. and F.M.H. Many are dated 1870. The rebuses consist of multiple small illustrations, all in watercolors over graphite, combined to create pictorial codes for the reader to decipher. All of the rebuses have been composed on separate sheets of paper which were mounted into the album (with usually one puzzle per leaf).
The illustrations reflect pictorial interpretations of the artists' life at home and in an apparently well-to-do (perhaps urban) milieu. It is possible that the authors lived in London, as at least two of the illustrations reference the city, including one scene with posters naming Pall Mall and Drury Lane, and another illustration depicting the closing down of Grant and Gask, a prominent draper and clothier in Oxford Street, London. Other illustrations probably incorporate family members, servants, trips taken, and Punch and Judy shows. They also document many varieties of the clothing and dress of the period. - Subject Terms:
