- Thomas Lister Farrar was born in 1836, the second son of James Hobson Farrar of Holmfirth, Yorkshire. He was educated at Bishopton Close, Ripon. In 1858 he moved to Manchester, England, to practice law.

Manuscript exercise book of trigonometry problems compiled by Thomas Lister Farrar at Bishopton Close Academy, from 1850 to 1851. The exercise book begins with an engraved frontispiece (Bean sculpt., Leeds), in which the central blank shield has been completed in ms.: T.L. Farrar, Mr. Clarke's academy, Bishopton Close, Ripon, 1850. The remainder of the notebook is entirely in manuscript, predominantly in pen and black ink. The text is written in a very neat hand, with underlining in red ink. Divisional headings are written in elaborate calligraphy. Diagrams and illustrations to accompany the exercises are in varying degrees of complexity, all in pen and ink, some with gray wash. Several small ornamental vignettes are completed in washes of multiple colors. The final page, with calligraphic flourishes, reads "Finis, midsummer 1851".
The exercise book begins with several short sections on simple trigonometric rules, with exercises. These sections are titled "Solution of right-angled plane triangles" and "Oblique angled plane triangles." The rest of the volume contains exercises on the practical application of trigonometry. A section titled "To measure a base line across a wide river" includes four diagrams overlaid on illustrated river scenes. The next section, "To find the height of a tower or any other object standing on an horizontal plane, the base of the tower &c. being accessible," is illustrated with views of church and castle towers. The remaining sections concern the application of trigonometry by various trades people, including masons, carpenters, tilers, plasterers, painters, glaziers, and plumbers. All sections include introductory text, problems and solutions, and diagrams and illustrations. - Subject Terms:
