Notes:
Lady Catherine Gladstone, née Glynne, married the English politician and author William Ewart Gladstone in 1838.
Bound in decorative blue glazed padded paper covers, with paper loop to hold included graphite pencil with ivory tip.
Manuscript account book, variously in pen and ink and in pencil, kept by Lady Catherine Gladstone. The entries are recorded (largely upside-down) in a small blue pocket notebook, the first page of which bears the name of Lady Gladstone and addresses at Fasque (House) and 17 Dover Street, Piccadilly. The remaining pages record purchases by Gladstone, including tea, meals, omnibuses, cabs, porters, maids, a map of London, gloves, hair washing, writing paper, Harvey Nichols, soap, biscuits, and a trip to Dover. She also notes periodic additions to her purse and the sum of its contents. The account book likely records only a partial summary of Gladstone's purchases, as the entries are few and far apart. Together with the notebook are a calling card for "Lady Gladstone, Miss Mary Gladstone" and two blank post office telegraph forms.
