Notes:
Margaret Scott Logie was from a family of powerful landowners in Montrose, Scotland. John Boyn was born at Tarbuckie in September, 1739. See: Rathven Old Parish Register, v. 1, p. 103a.
Manuscript account kept by John Boyn, shoemaker of Tarbuckie, for shoes bought by Margaret Scott Logie of Linhouse, Montrose. The accounts are recorded in pen and ink, in tables across two pages of a folded folio sheet. It includes shoes made for Lady Logie as well as shoes for a Miss Duff, Mr. John Duff, and Margaret Ogilvie. By far the greatest customer is Miss Duff, for whom Boyn records 28 pairs of shoes, in blue cloth, turkey leather, or velvet silk, plus many pairs of slippers and galoshes. In contrast, Lady Logie purchases only five pairs of shoes for herself. Her maid Margaret Ogelois must make do with two pairs of shoes over three years, with a number of repairs. Boyn records the date, service, and price of each transaction and completes the ledger with a sum of dues totaling £5 17s 9d, of which £1 had been paid already.
