Album of over 1500 printed pulls, pen-and-ink drawings, and manuscript notes recording engraving work on gold and silver by William Walter Burch. Pasted onto the front pastedown is a trade card bearing the notice, "Burch, engraver on gold, silver, &c, 18 Lombard Street, London. Cards, bills of parcels, book plates, seals, &c."
The album is in three sections. The first part, p. 3-166, contains printed pulls of work engraved by Burch. The designs, which range in size from a centimeter square to a full page, have been printed on separate pieces of paper, trimmed closely, and pasted into the album, often many designs per page. The pulls show the designs in reverse orientation; text reads backwards. The majority of the designs feature the crests and shields of armorial compositions, as well as some entirely textual engraving. Most of the designs are annotated in pen and ink with notes on the types of objects (e.g. teapots), names of customers for armorial designs, dates, and firms for whom the work was done. Within this section the work is organized by firm, and then approximately by date: William Fearn, 1821; Emes & Barnard, 1822-1829; Barnard & Sons, 1828-1832; Robinson & Son, 1821-1827; and G.W. & G. (i.e. Green, Ward & Green), 1821-1831.
The second part, p. 166-212, contains designs drawn in pen-and-ink, with occasional printed pulls interspersed. As in the first part, the designs are predominantly armorial. The illustrations are annotated in the same manner as the first part; all of the designs in this part are for the firm of Green & Ward., and dated from 1821-1830. The third and final part, p. 213-226, contains later work, dated from 1840 to 1871, although very little work was done after 1842. Here the designs are printed directly on the page, in counterproof, i.e. with the same orientation as the engraved work, text reading forward. At the end of the volume there is a 24-page index of names represented among the armorial designs.
