- In 1823 James Hetley opened a glass warehouse at 35 Soho Square, London. Other members of his family were already in the trade in London selling glass shades, and Hetley's Camden Road branch was probably a workshop. Little is known of the business's activity before 1851, when Hetley exhibited a stained glass window at the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. In 1879 James Hetley & Co. were appointed by W.E. Chance & Co. of Oldbury as sole agents for colored antique glass in London and the south of England. The bulk of the business was with Chance Brothers of Smethwick, linking antique glass with the closely allied business of decorated leaded window glass.
Manuscript scrapbook, account book, and deed, in various hands, concerning the glass business of James Hetley & Co. of 35 Soho Square, London. The scrapbook consists of about 100 pages of mounted printed material and business letters, all concerning the glass trade. Dated items range from 2 September 1856 to 18 August 1899, but the bulk of material is from the 1870s. Printed price lists are the most common element, with tables laying out current prices for glasses of various sizes, colors, and qualities. The lists are issued by numerous companies, including James Hetley & Co., Pilkington, The London & Manchester Plate Glass Co., Chance Brothers Birmingham, The Platts Crown Sheet & Plate Glass Works Stourbridge, C. Th. Chapuys & Co., Nailsea Glass Works Bristol, and Warren's Patent Embossed Glass Co. All manners of glass are mentioned, including stained, painted, embossed, fluted, photographic, plate, sheet, window, and white & colored glass for railway purposes. Glass commodities include milk pans, cream pots, fish globes, bee glasses, grape glasses, and aquariums.
The second volume is an account book containing the accounts of John M. Salmond (1901-1904), Frederic Salmond (1899-1910), and Percy William Salmond (1905-1910), along with a "Balance Sheet, 35 Soho Square" (1901-1921). The small collection is completed by a 4-leaf vellum Deed of Partnership between J.H. Hetley, Glass Merchant of 35 Soho Square and J.M. Salmond, dated 30 June 1882, when Salmond, formerly the manager, became partner. - Subject Terms:
