Album of drawings of animals and landscapes by Dorothy Harriet Wentworth. A number of the drawings are signed Dora H. Wentworth or Dora Harriet Wentworth. Most of the drawings are labeled, but only a single drawing is dated (1830). All of the drawings are in graphite, and most have a finished appearance, with significant detail and shading. The drawings appear to have been completed and later mounted (sometimes on tinted paper) and collected for binding in the present album. Occasionally two small drawings are mounted on a single leaf. All or most of the drawings may be copies of artwork by other artists. In several animal drawings, the original artist is named: Samuel Howitt (twice) and Paulus Potter (once). Two landscape drawings (of St. Maurice, Switzerland, and Tivoli, Italy) are labeled "Landscape Annual". These scenes are very likely copied from Thomas Roscoe's The tourist in Switzerland and Italy, also titled The landscape annual for 1830 (London: Robert Jennings, 1830).
Animal subjects include boar, sheep, spaniels and hounds, many deer, cows, birds, goats, a bear, an Indian antelope, an American argali, a fox, and a squirrel. Landscape subjects include many Swiss locations, including St. Maurice, Chillon Castle, Lake Geneva, Le château d'Aubonne, and Staubbach Falls. Other places depicted include Salzburg, the Tyrol, Tivoli, Somersetshire, ruins of the temple Minerva Medica at Rome, a Virginia river, Koblenz, and St. Michael's Mount (Cornwall). - Subject Terms:
