Paper watermarked 1819.
Pen and brown ink. Illustrations consist (in order) of: a sketch of a farmstead in black ink; a scene titled "Shipwrecked smugglers" in black ink with black wash; flowers, in black ink with green, white, pink, purple and yellow wash.
Bound in quarter calf with marbled paper covers; partially rebacked.
An early 19th century manuscript treatise on landscape painting, with three original illustrations. Consists of 41 pages on landscape painting, in ten sections, with a sketch and a wash drawing, followed by 6 pages on the preparation of colors for painting on velvet, accompanied by a floral illustration in watercolor. The first unnumbered page bears inscription "Presented to H: M F Baxter; by her very sincere friend Alexander George Watt." The second unnumbered page bears inscription "To Henrietta M F Baxter. Accompanied with AGW's kindest regards and a thousand wishes for her success in the art of painting." The third unnumbered page is a table of contents. The three full-page tipped-in illustrations are on a different paper from the rest of the work. - Subject Terms:
