The Independent Group (1952-1955), formed at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, was the first group of British artists to introduce mass-media images into art; as such, they have been called the "Fathers of Pop." The film discusses the group's ideas and sources of inspiration, particularly American popular culture. The exhibition "This is tomorrow" (London, 1956) was the culmination of I.G. activities. Its influence on the 60's generation of Pop artists, including Peter Blake, Dick Smith, Derek Boshier, and David Hockney, is discussed. - Subject Terms:
