First printed in Latin in Vicenza in 1475 without maps; the maps from engraved copperplates were first included in the Bologna, 1477 edtion.
According to Philips in his List of geographical atlases in the Library of Congress, this edition is translated by Jacopo D'Angelo but edited and remodelled by Bernardo Sylvani of Eboli, an eminent geographer of the time; the principles of the revision are developed in the intoduction on leaves [maltese cross]2 and [maltese cross]3.
Maps show pictorial relief.
Signatures: [maltese cross]⁴ ([maltese cross]2 missigned [maltese cross]1) A⁸ B-H⁶ I⁸ (I8 verso blank).
Errata: recto of leaf [maltese cross]4.
Text printed in two parallel columns; a full column has 60 lines of text.
Title page printed completely in red; text printed in black with red; guide letters lack rublication.
The maps are printed from new wood-blocks with the lettering type printed in red and black; includes numerous in text woodcut diagrams including a full page one on leaf I1 recto. The initial map [1]. mappamundi is printed on the verso and recto of the inner form; maps [2]. Prima Evropae tabvla through to [26]. Vndecima Asiae tabvla are printed on the verso and recto of the inner form; map [27]. Dvodecima Asiae tabvla has the verso of the right part of the leaf blank; and Sylvani's modern mappamundi is printed on the inner form of verso and recto with the recto of the outer form of the left side of the sheet and the verso outer form of the right side of the sheet left blank.
The initial mappamundi has been revised from the previous Ptolemy Geographia editions to take into account modern geographical discoveries though it only partially succeeds as Sylvani did not stray too far from classical Ptolomeic traditions (Shirley, 31). The final map, the mappamundi with the heart-shaped projection, has no title but depicts only the western coast of South America, again called Terra Sancta Crucis, Cuba, Hispaniola and other unnamed West Indian islands, "Terra Laboratoris" or Newfoundland which is situated very close to Ireland, and "Regalis domus" whose western coastline has been left open. This map was never reprinted separately and, hence, remains scarce (Shirley, 32).
