To the right honourable, the right worshipfull counsellors, and others the cheerefull aduenturors for the aduancement of that Christian and noble plantation in Virginia [by Richard Hakluyt] (caption title at head of leaf A2r); leaves A2-A4. Caption title "A relation of such things, as Don Ferdinando de Soto, the adelantado of Florida passed in seeking to conquer the said countrey ..." at head of leaf B1r. Running title reads: The discouerie of Florida, next adioyning to Virginia.
In 1609 the London promoters of the Virginia colony, in the hope of improving its conditions, applied for a second and more specific charter with enlarged privileges. At the same time a number of pamphlets were issued in behalf of the colony, e.g. "Nova Britannia" and "A good speed to Virginia." Hakluyt, a persistent promoter of Elizabethan overseas expansion, especially the colonization of North America, in order to attract further attention to the venture, published this translation of the anonymous Portuguese account of Florida, "Relaçam verdadeira ...," under a title which called attention to the possibilities of Virginia, and said in his dedicatory letter to the counsellors of the company: "This worke ... though small in shew, yet great in substance, doth yeeld much light to our enterprise now on foot: whether you desire to know the present and future commodities of our countrie; or the qualities and conditions of the inhabitants, or what course is best to be taken with them."
