The top cover slides into a recessed notch on three sides.

The box includes recesses for 18 pigment jars, with cork tops. Each jar bears printed label: "Hancock & Son, Diglis Ceramic Art Color Works ... Worcester" and "Howell, James & Co., Regent St., London, retail agents."
An adjoining compartment includes four quill brush heads and one dip pen with metal nib and wood handle. The compartment also bears printed label: "James Hancock & Son, Diglis Ceramic Art Color Works, Worcester.
