Notes:
Richard Parkes Bonington was an English landscape painter, born on October 25, 1803 in Arnold, near Nottingham. His professional education was predominantly French, after his family moved to France in 1817, and he studied under Baron Antoine-Jean Gros. He developed a reputation for his works of marine, coast, and river views, and was especially known for his watercolors and graphite drawings. He died on September 23, 1828 in London of tuberculosis.
Title devised by cataloger.
A reproduction of a painting, "The Coast of Picardy," by Bonington from the Wallace Collection is inserted in the volume behind the front flyleaf.
Bound in brown half-leather binding with marbled boards and endpapers. The spine is decorated with gold tooling and "Bonington" in gilt.
The album includes an autographed letter from Bonington to John Barnett, dated "Paris, Friday, Dec 1827," in which Bonington gives instructions on various projects. Bonington discusses sending his paintings to the Duke of Bedford (a patron), James Carpenter, and "Mr Daniel" (presumably William Daniel).
Printed material includes portraits of Richard Parkes Bonington, as well as a lithograph, mezzotints, line engravings, and etchings after work by Bonington. Also present is a printed article by F.W. Farholt, from the Art Journal publication, on "British artists: their style and character, with engraved illustrations", featuring Richard Parkes Bonington. Four prints in the volume are accompanied by clippings or leaves with printed text about the work.
