- Notes:
- The photograph album records the honeymoon travels of Annie and Hubert Jerningham in France, Italy, and Germany, 1874-1875. Each albumen print is accompanied by a dated caption and annotation in manuscript. The handwriting of the captions matches that of the signature of Hubert Jerningham, found following the dedication at the end of the volume, alongside Annie's. The album may have been compiled by Hubert as a present for Annie, whose name appears in gilt on the front cover.
Destination depicted include: Boulogne sur Mer (2 photographs); Paris (2); Lyon (6); Marseille (4); Nice (4); Monaco / Monte Carlo (8); Corniche Road, France (4); Mentone (3); San Remo (1); Ventimiglia (1); Genoa (14); Pisa (13); Rome (93); Florence (25); Bologna (1); Venice (24); Naples (1); Munich (14); Darmstadt (1); Baden Baden (1); Paris, Louvre (9). In the section depicting Rome, it appears that a handful of leaves have been removed. Many photographs depict paintings or sculpture in the cities visited, including many religious scenes (the Jerninghams were devout Catholics).
Photographs vary in size; many are large, up to approximately 30 x 40 cm. All were apparently purchased from commercial photographers. The names of (Carlo) Naya and Alinari (i.e. Fratelli Alinari) appear on some of the photographs. Others, unsigned, were likely the work of Robert Macpherson, James Anderson, Cuccioni, Pietro Dovizielli, or Enrico Van Lint. - Subject Terms:
