The hand shadow designs featured on the handkerchief appear to have been based on the designs from Henry Bursill's books of hand shadows, originally published by Griffith and Farran in 1859. Some of the designs were also featured in the 1861 volume of the French magazine, Le Magasin Pittoresque, and several other publications, often without attribution to Henry Bursill.
Victorian linen handkerchief with a printed design of five hand shadows and decorative borders in red ink. Hand shadows include "the swan," "the hare," "the deer," "the bird," and "the chamois."
