In his youth, he was a draper's apprentice before becoming an artist/illuminator. His occupations also included draper, wallpaper designer, and wallpaper manufacturer.
Bound in original panelled gilt morocco over heavy album boards, with crimson moiré endpapers.
Illustrated manuscript of the hymn "Te deum laudamus" written on on parchment mounted on boards. In English with Victorian neo-gothic illumination. The text is written in blackletter script, organized into two columns on each page with elaborate borders and several decorative initials. The manuscript is signed on the last page in a small hand, with "Edgar Smith, illuminator, Well Holme, Armley, 1888" in the left column and the artist's gilt motto "If I forget thee O Jerusalem, let my right arm forget her cunning" in the right column.
