- The inscription means "Syrupus de rhabarbarum," which translates to "syrup of rhubarb."
"Take rhabarb, sena, ana 3 iiss. Violet flowers m.i. cinnamon 3 iss. ginger 3 ss. waters of betony, succory, and bugloss, ana ib iss. Steep together some time, then boil it, and make up the strain'd liquor into a syrup with fine sugar ib ii. and syrup of roses solutive 3 iv. ... The virtues of this may be judg'd by the rhubarb and sena, for the other Ingredients are good for nothing; and even the spices, as correctors, in such small quantities, are ridiculous: as likewise are the simple waters, were they to be had ..." The apothecary jar is bulbous on spreading foot with a ridged neck, flanged spout, and strap-like, looked handle. The label panel is curved slightly upwards with an even outline and inscribed with "S. de rhabarb." The jar is decorated in blue with the image of an angle that has tabs at the neck and white-edged wings. The body of the jar is glazed in white. The rim above the neck is glazed while the rim of the spout is unglazed. The base is hollowed and unglazed. See Spencer Collection. - Form/Genre:
