"This collection was commenced in the 16th century by the Emperor Maximilian I, and was continued, and increased, by his grandson, the Emperor Rudolph II. It continued imperial property until the year 1782, when the building at Prague, in which the museum was contained, being required for barracks, it was sold to Chevalier von Schönfeld, a distinguished amateur who, after having increased it by the addition of his own collection, opened it to the public, under the title of 'The Technological Museum of Vienna'"--Page [iii]
