- "According both to the captions on the prints and to the publisher's advertisement, original drawing were made during the voyage by James Cleveley, carpenter in the 'Resolution' [during James Cook's third and final voyage, 1776-1780], and then turned into finished images by his brother John after James's return. Sets of titled engravings were produced by Francis Jukes and published by Thomas Martyn. Some doubts have been cast on whether these are based on original sketches by James, as they contain details not accurate to the Pacific at the time, but rather taken from the wider European iconography of the Pacific (see Rüdiger Joppien and Bernard Smith, 'The Cleveley problem', vol. III, pp. 216-221 in 'The Art of Cook's Voyages' (3 vols., Yale YUP 1988)."--National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
Martyn's prospectus for the present work refers to the set of four prints as "Views in the South Seas." Martyn notes that the prints can be had for "half a guinea each" uncolored, or "finely painted in water-colours, in a style equal to the original drawings, at one guinea and a half each." Print [1], "View of Charlotte Sound in New Zealand in the South Seas," depicts two large crowded British ships at anchor in the calm bay with several boats and outrigger canoes on the water, longhouses and canoes on the shore among palms and other exotic trees, an officer among a group of Maori to the right foreground with a sailor saluting and two others folding a sail and another seated on the hillock to the right, a group of Maori working on a canoe to the left. Plate mark 49.0 x 64.3 cm. Imprint is dated "Feby. 5, 1788."
Print [2], "View of Huaheine one of the Society Islands in the South Seas," depicts two British ships in the calm bay with outrigger canoes, a naval launch and other boats on the water, huts and a longhouse on the shore among extensive exotic foliage and palms, a large bonfire on the beach to the left, high mountains rising beyond. Plate mark 50.1 x 66.5 cm. Imprint is dated "May 26, 1787."
Print [3], "View of Morea one of the Friendly Islands in the South Seas," depicts two British ships at anchor in the bay with canoes and other boats on the water, a longhouse and other buildings on the beach to the left, willows and other trees and foliage throughout the scene, several figures to the foreground including a small British launch coming ashore, a group of Polynesians, and British sailors seated on a rock and bargaining with Polynesians for cloth, high craggy mountains beyond. Plate mark 50.0 x 66.3 cm. Imprint is dated "Septr., 1787."
Print [4], "View of Owyhee, one of the Sandwich Islands in the South Seas, With the Death of Captn Cook," depicts the death of Cook in the skirmish at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, on 14 February 1779. His ships 'Resolution' and 'Discovery' lie offshore, firing guns. 'Resolution' (right) is shown without her foremast, which had been taken ashore for repair following damage to it that had been the cause of Cook turning back to Hawaii. Plate mark 49.1 x 64.9 cm. Imprint is dated "July 5, 1788."
