Bound in contemporary red leather and marbled boards.
Leaves of the album bear the watermark of J. Whatman, 1808.
Annotated in graphite on rear endpaper: "Winthrop family, Knolton [Knowlton] Court, Shepperds Well, Canterbury, Dover." Knowlton Court was in the possession of the D'Aeth family from 1707 to 1904; its connection to the Winthrop family is unclear. The rear pastedown bears a small 20th-century bookplate with the initials "M. V.R. W."
The volume includes several hundred patterns for embroidery and lace, drawn in black ink on the rectos of 118 leaves, by an unidentified compiler. Most of the designs are arranged in vertical columns (likely intended to be embroidered on the borders of shawls, handkerchiefs, hems, etc.) Many employ scrolling floral and vegetal patterns. One page has a note that indicates that the design is a "collar for a morning dress" with an area where lace will be inserted. Several other designs have notes of "lace" or "Blond" (this almost certainly refers to blonde, a style of bobbin lace made in long strips that was popular in the early nineteenth century). A rectangular piece of plain white netting has been inserted as well.
Several loose, folded sheets of paper are inserted. Three of the loose drawings are signed "Eliza Farham [?]". It's unclear if Farham is also responsible for the entire volume. There is also a tiny scrap of newspaper inserted.
Accompanied by "A Nineteenth Century Pattern Book" by Isobel Minto, an article from an unidentified magazine, about a similar early 19th-century pattern book.
