- Notes:
- The title and maker of the box are printed on an illustrated label pasted to the underside of the box top. The label also advises: "Note, these colors should be used direct from the bottles, and not be poured out as they would thereby become thick. The corks should be replaced when the colors are out of use. If the colors become thick by evaporation they are perfectly soluble in water which may be used if the bottles are afterwards shaken."
Restricted fragile material. Use requires permission of the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts.
The box contains 12 glass bottles of colors (each 11 cm high x 4 cm in diameter); 6 of the 12 retain original fluid. All but one bear printed labels to indicate the colors within: Dimension Lines, Ct. Iron, Fir, Earth No. 1, Brick Section, Stone, Red Brick Elev., Concrete, Oak, Slate, and Section Lines." The one bottle now lacking a label retains a green fluid. All 12 have cork stoppers.
Set into a narrow compartment at the front of the box is a smaller wooden box (with sliding lid) containing an assortment of pen nibs made by Perry & Co. ("Durabrite no. 5" and two copies of "Durabrite no. 6"), Lamson Paragon Supply Co. ("Plic Pen no. 1"), George W. Hughes ("Ajusto" and two copies of "Bayard pen"), Joseph Gillott's ("Super Red"), R. Esterbrook & Co. ("Relief"), and John Heath ("Ye old court hand pen").
Also in the narrow compartment are two identical parallel rules, by an unidentified maker (perhaps Stanley). Each has two ungraduated strips of wood, stained dark black, and two brass cross pieces.
The box has brass hinges, a brass lock, and an oval brass plate on the box top. Also present is a brass key. - Subject Terms:
