- Notes:
- Carolina Boyle (1803-1883), the daughter of Hon. Sir Courtenay Boyle and Carolina Amelia Poyntz, was a maid of honor to the dowager queen Adelaide, in which capacity she would not have entered into commercial ventures. The current prints were thus privately printed.
The only other publication of Louis Marvy's work in English (during Marvy's lifetime) was Sketches after English landscape painters, published by David Bogue in 1850. Marvy, a friend of Thackeray, resided in London from about 1848 to 1850.
Not truly mezzotints, despite the title. The prints employ a variety of etching, soft-ground etching, and aquatint.
"Dedicated by permission to Her Majesty Adelaide the Queen Dowager"--Front cover.
BAC: British Art Center copy with autograph on front cover: "The Countess of Jersey" -- possibly Sarah Sophia Child-Villiers, Countess of Jersey (1785-1867).
A series of landscapes of largely Italianate views, showing castles, lakes, and cottages, usually populated by two women on horseback. The views are untitled and were possibly not meant to provide exact representations of real scenery. The two women are likely a representation of Boyle and her sister Mary. The views may have been inspired by travels taken by the Boyles from about 1846 to 1848, in which they toured through Germany to Rome before settling outside of Florence at the Villa Careggi. The Boyles returned to England sometime late in 1848. - Subject Terms:
