- Frederic James Shields was a British artist, illustrator and designer associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Charles Rowley was founder of the Ancoats Brotherhood, a group with aims of bringing art and literature to the working classes.
Annotated in ink, on verso: "Merton, July [18]82. Charles Rowley of Ancoats (left), William Morris (right)." In a different (later?) hand, crossed out: "Twins [of?] different mothers." The annotation's identification of Morris as the figure at right appears to be erroneous. A close variant of this photograph appeared in the Manchester City News of March 4, 1911, to illustrate an article noting the death of Shields. - Subject Terms:
