Annotated photograph album, by an unidentified compiler, probably a British officer during the First World War, recording experiences stationed at camps in the British Isles in 1917 and 1918. It appears likely, from a couple of the images found within (a shot of the Battalion on parade in Limerick and another of the mascot 'Billy' the goat) that the compiler may have belonged to the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Most of the photographs in the album are portraits of military companions and family members (the latter are not annotated). A number of the photographs depict various nursing personnel met during time spent at Fazakerley Military Hospital, near Liverpool, and the "Princes Avenue" Auxiliary Hospital (probably the hospital at 10 Princes Road, Liverpool). Initial pages of the album bear photographs of the training camp at Prees Heath in Shropshire, where trench warfare was practiced (from 1915). From there, the compiler spent time in Reading, before moving to Dollymount near Dublin, where the British Army had established a musketry range. One shot shows "Buchanan, Black Watch" lying on the ground with a machine gun. Ensuing photographs depict time spent in Limerick, before a short section of what appear to be family photographs. A number of officers are depicted, from several regiments including the Black Watch, the Royal Munster Fusiliers, the Royal Irish Fusiliers, and the Loyal North Lancashires.
Whether due to a professional move, or more likely due to wounds suffered, the next section is titled "Happy Memories of Fazakerley, 1918," and comprises 10 photographs of nurses and patients residing at the 1st Western General Hospital, including Nurse Watson, Sister Livingston, Sister Pride, Nurse Allister, and Sister Holmes, who is described as "An Angel on Earth." - Subject Terms:
