BAC: British Art Center copy is extra-illustrated with the addition of 162 leaves, onto some of which have been pasted printed ephemera, but most bearing original photographs (albumen prints); with a hand-drawn red border to each page. The added images--which appear near the text which they illustrate--include a deserted St Peter's Square and Spanish Steps, the skeletons of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini, and a shot from the Forum Romanum featuring a puzzled-looking policeman (the Forum was at this time un-restored, overgrown, and considered unsafe). The work also features portraits of people in traditional dress, shots taken some distance outside the city walls along the Appian Way, in addition to numerous images of Roman landmarks, works of art, and church interiors. It seems likely that the images belonged to a souvenir selection of photographs.
BAC: British Art Center copy bound in contemporary vellum. Upper covers with gilt vignette of the temples of Saturn and Concorde. Gauffered edges. Presentation inscription: Agnes Wauchope from C.M.D. 26th Septr. 1881. The presenter may be Charlotte Christina Agnes (who went by her final given name), one of the daughters of Robert Adam Wauchope, when he was stationed in Bengal. The Indian connection may explain the presence of a gilt-stamped swastika (in addition to a Chi Rho) on the front covers. Agnes married Edmund Batten Forbes in 1885.
