- Commemorative printed handkerchief, with the Royal Coat of Arms of the Prince of Wales as central motif, surrounded by eight scenes celebrating different parts of the Empire, numerous annotated banners commemorating notable events, and a border incorporating the names of territories from around the Empire. With an indigo border.
The handkerchief was produced to celebrate the silver jubilee of Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1935. The year also coincided with the silver jubilee of King George V, who had invested his son Edward (the future Edward VIII) as Prince of Wales in the first year of his own reign in 1910. The handkerchief celebrates notable achievements and discoveries made since 1910, as well as commemorating Edward's visits to some of the leading Commonwealth between 1910 and 1935, notably to Australia, Canada, India, and South Africa. The eight images depict the Federal Parliament House in Canberra, the Sydney Bridge and Harbour, the Taj Mahal, the Council Chamber in New Delhi, Capetown, the Union Building in Pretoria, Niagra and Horseshoe Falls, and the Federal Parliament Building at Ottawa. George V died in the following year, and Edward VIII abdicated at the end of 1936. - Subject Terms:
