Notes:
The creator of the present sampler may be the Charlotte Hitchins christened on May 2, 1796, at Frodsham, Cheshire; or the Charlotte Hitchins christened on Oct 12, 1800, at Saint Hilary, Cornwall. The latter may be more likely, given the presence of verse by Rev. Moore of Cornwall.
Embroidered sampler inscribed "Charlotte Hitchins, 1808." The sampler includes, from top to bottom: the image of an unidentified church, flanked by an angel on each side; the final lines of verse from "Soliloquy written in a country churchyard"; Hitchins's inscription; a depiction of Adam and Eve grabbing from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The sampler is framed by simple vine-work. Various plant and animal forms fill the margins, including trees, roses, shepherds and sheepdogs, a lion, a deer, butterflies, and birds.
The excerpt of verse reads: "The dead shall quit these tenements of day, And view again the long extinguished day, It must be so the same Almighty pow'r, From dust who form'd us can from dust restore, Chear'd with the pleasing hope & safely trust, Jehovah's pow'r to raise me from the dust, On his unfailing promises rely, And all the horrors of the grave defy."
