- Satirical print, on linen, depicting the buzz of preparations for the Great Exhibition of London, 1851. The print has the same title and similar subject matter as a panorama by George Augustus Sala issued as: The Great Exhibition "wot is to be", or, Probable results of the industry of all nations in the year '51 : showing what is to be exhibited, who is to exhibit it; in short, how its [sic] all going to be done / by Vates Secundus. London : The Committee of the Society for Keeping Things in their Places [i.e. Ackermann], 1850 (see link herewith). The content depicted in the present handkerchief, however, appears to be entirely original.
The handkerchief satirizes politicians and other notable figures. Those ridiculed include Disraeli "as a Hebrew gent," Alexis Soyer with "His patent Digester and magic Gridiron," and Lord Brougham "as a senator & a French Citizen." It also includes several images lampooning America, including "Two Genuine Yankees prouder of their Stars & stripes than paying their debts" with a caricature of a white man whipping an enslaved man. - Subject Terms:
