- The firm of Smith, Beck and Beck was active from 1857 to 1865, "primarily an optician and optical instrument maker with microscopes being a particular specialty." See: Hannavy, J. Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography.
A magnifier such as this may have been used for viewing material such as prints, photographs, and cartes de visite.
Binocular lorgnette style magnifying glass with two achromatic glass lenses, brass frames, and ebony handle. The frames include a sliding bridge, stamped with the words "Smith, Beck and Beck, London, patent." The instrument is accompanied by its original leather case, which slides over the two lenses. The case is stamped in gold: "Smith Beck & Beck, 310 Cornhill, London." - Subject Terms:
