- The artist Edmund G. Fuller (1858-1940) achieved most renown as a marine artist at St. Ives, Cornwall, but he was also active as comic artist and copper worker. He "came to St. Ives from Fife in Scotland in the early 1890s, and in his painting engaged with the many moods of the sea, often in an Impressionist manner. His work showed his interest in J.A.M. Whistler ... He exhibited locally at Lanham's, the Arts Club and from his own studios at Barnoon and Dunvegan, as well as nationally [at the Royal Academy] ..."--Cornwall Artists Index, http://cornwallartists.org.
Sketchbooks bear the manufacturer's labels of George Rowney & Co. (v. 2) and Winsor & Newton (v. 3 and 5). Volumes 1 and 5 also bear the stamp or label of James Lanham, Ltd., merchant of artists' materials at St. Ives.
Collection of five pocket sketchbooks containing drawings and notes by Edmund G. Fuller, artist at St. Ives. Subjects include countryside and village landscapes, marine and maritime scenes, portraits, transport, animals, bookplate design, and comic illustration. Most of the drawings are titled and dated; many are also signed or monogrammed. Most drawings are in graphite alone. Watercolors are interspersed, most frequently in volume 4. Each sketchbook is signed and dated by Fuller (between 1892 and 1923).
Common subjects include scenes in and around St. Ives. Volume 1 (1892) includes two drawings of a woman who may be his wife, Emma. Volume 3 (1905) features subjects in and around Salisbury, including the cathedral, Bishop's Palace, and High Street. Volume 4 (1916-1919) includes a number of sketches of the scenery of Millers Dale and buildings of Bristol, the latter illustrated with watercolors. The volume includes sketches of a number of dwellings with thatched roofs, perhaps in the Cotswolds. Also present is a portrait of a man with knit cap and pipe -- perhaps a self-portrait. Volume 5 (1923) includes sketches of Eastleigh and Barnstaple.
In addition to the sketches there are occasional notes, a few verses of poetry, names and addresses, painting supply lists, notes on colors used, and a few recipes. - Subject Terms:
