Bound in later half calf and marbled boards.
Manuscript mock-gothic story, dedicated to Frank Heathcote, possibly relating to a failed relationship or unrequited love, by an unidentified author. Text, including title page and dedication, is written in black ink. There are 15 illustrations drawn on the same pages as text, also in black ink, and an additional seven full-page plate-like illustrations, drawn in watercolor over pen and black ink. The small volume is presented as if it were a three-volume work with chapters and title pages for each "volume" (each of which comprises a small number of pages). The abstruse plot presumably relies upon humorous incidents and characters known to Heathcote and his circle.
The dedication leaf reads: "To Frank Heathcote, Esquire, whose cheerfulness and ready wit have endeared him to the elegant salons of Paris as they have to the sporting circles of England, these volumes are with much regard dedicated by the author." In 1867, Heathcote founded the Hurlingham Club, a sporting and social club located on the estate of Richard Naylor, at Fulham.
