Notes:
Manuscript school notebook on botany, illustrated with watercolor drawings, kept by Maggie Mackenzie, ca. 1850. Writing is in a clean cursive hand throughout, with calligraphic headings; it is probably the work of a girl in middle or late adolescence. Nine leaves are illustrated, in part or entirely. Illustrations comprise small drawings of plants or plant parts, drawn in watercolor over graphite.
Text is organized under the the following headings: botany; root; stems; leaves; the flower; corolla; the pistil; stamens; classes; classification. Subject matter is moderately technical, with definitions of the primary topics and an emphasis on terminology for the description of plants. For example, the section on leaves provides common terms for describing leaf morphology (ovate, hastate, sagittate, etc.).
