The box is made from mahogany, with ebony edging, brass hinges and clasps.
The manufacturer is unidentified.

Set of alphabet tiles, made of bone, letters incised and inked in black, with upper case and lower case letterforms on opposite sides of each tile. The tiles each measure 17 x 13 x 3 mm. The 198 tiles comprise: six complete alphabets; six extra sets of vowels; six extra tiles of the letter "Y"; and six blank tiles. The tiles are set into into 33 compartments of a wooden box, each compartment containing six tiles. The 33 compartments are divided among three rows. Above each row is an engraved strip of bone indicating where the letters should be stored.
