Album of 102 photographs, on 14 pages, depicting an early motorcar tour of the Robert Burns trail around Dumfries and other areas of Scotland, ca. 1905. The photographer or compiler is unidentified, but the traveling party appears to consist of four men (or perhaps five, if the photographer is always behind the camera). The photographs are of varying sizes, but generally measure about 8 x 10 cm, or smaller. The majority are captioned, in black ink. Three of the captions include mention of a year: 1904 (once) and 1905 (twice). The travelers' automobile is depicted in three photographs on page 1. The chassis appears to be that of a Rolls-Royce, whose first cars appeared in 1904.
The first page includes a picture of the travelers in their car, captioned, "Off for the Burns country trip in Tully's first motor." A number of photos that follow depict places associated with Burns, including: "In the stockyard at Ellisland, where Burns wrote 'To Mary in heaven'"; "The Burns Inn, Tarbolton"; "The house where Burns died in Dumfries ..."; "The old Masonic lodge building at Tarbolton where Burns was made a Mason"; "The Tam o' Shanter Inn, Ayr"; "The cottage where Burns was born"; "Burns Monument, Dumfries"; "Auld Brig o' Doon"; and "The Burns monument, Thornhill." A few photos also depict descendants of Burns, including a set outside Burns' house in Dumfries with Burns' grand daughter and great grand daughter, who had become caretakers of the place where Burns died.
A couple of photos appear to name some of the travelers. In addition to the "Tully" identified as owner of the car, "Bob Hogarth" is also identified in a caption as he poses with the motorcar on page 1. On page 3, a photo is captioned: "Jim Wood, with some top lambs in 1905." - Subject Terms:
