Manuscript account of a tour in North Wales, illustrated with engravings and original drawings, by John Walter, of Lindsay Place, Chelsea. Walter's writing is jovial and his illustrations, although naïve, are lively and detailed. The author is travelling with a female companion, his “Dame," and his wife's waiting maid Esther. The topics are at times coarse: he writes knowingly, for example, about the charms of “Kitty Owen” (and provides a suitably racy illustration). Walter appears to be writing for an adult audience of male friends. The front of the volume includes "A list of places &c. seen during this tour" and "A list of the prints and drawings &c."
The identity of John Walter, author of this manuscript, is not certain. There is a business card for "Mr Walter, Lindsay Place, Chelsea" affixed to the front pastedown. There are also several humorous notes addressed to Walter at the front of the volume (one to "Sir John Walter Knight of the Snuffers, Grand Cross of the ancient Order of Humourists &c &c"). In 1817, the owner of The Times was John Walter (1776-1847), and the frontispiece of the manuscript includes the image of a winged Mercury holding a newspaper, in a design echoing a masthead. But the owner of The times cannot be placed at the Lindsay Place address. According to ODNB, "Walter gave up the house in Brompton Row and returned to his old apartments at Printing House Square" shortly after the death of his wife in 1815; in 1818, he devoted his attentions to construction of the Bear Wood estate, near Reading. - Subject Terms:
