Notes:
The Martins were a notable family of Anstey, in Leicestershire. Their home, Anstey Pastures, was built in 1833 by the descendants of Thomas Martin on land he had leased from Queen Elizabeth in 1588. This land was later sold to Robert Martyn by King James I. The Hall was demolished, and the site of the house now forms part of the A46 Western Bypass. Whatton Hall was another family house, owned by John Martin.
Charles William Martin (1850-1895) was the son of the Reverend Robert Martin. His entry in the Harrow School Register 1801-1900 reads as follows: "son of the Rev. R. Martin, Anstey Pastures, Leicester. [Entered Harrow, Easter 1864] Left 1866. Land agent, of Barrow House, near Loughborough. Died at Montreal, April 13th, 1895."
Bound in contemporary half roan and brown cloth.
Album of drawings by Charles William Martin and other family or friends, 1866. The drawings are in graphite or pen and ink; most are complete and executed with moderate skill. Subjects of the drawings include: Whatton Hall, Loughborough; various unidentified men and women in contemporary dress, presumably family or friends; dogs; trees; and studies of eyes, noses and mouths. Over half of the drawings are signed and dated; a number of the studies are inscribed "from E.M.'s copies."
