The son of a prominent horse trainer, Stanley Wootton (1895-1986) had a brief riding career ca. 1910. From 1921, he succeeded his father as manager of Treadwell House, a horse training establishment at Epsom. He would remain a successful trainer of horses and jockeys until 1962.
The collection comprises 24 letters addressed to Stanley Wootton, 1933-1934, concerning horse racing and the race course at Epsom, England (home of the Derby horse race). Part of the correspondence is about an attempt to close the London road over the Downs, as the motorists got in the way of the exercising horses, and many horses had been injured by broken glass. There are six letters dealing with the case, none of which are signed. Other letters concern minor racing scandals. - Subject Terms:
