Cooper, N. The opulent eye: late Victorian and Edwardian taste in interior design
BAC: British Art Center copy lacks original portfolios and the printed list identifying the subject of each photograph. However, the list identifying items 1-50 is supplied in facsimile, from the Getty Research Institute copy.
The photographs primarily document the interiors of houses in England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as a small number of public buildings, circa 1900. Many views include depictions of paintings and furniture. Mantels also receive special attention. The views include entrance halls, reception rooms, stairwells and fireplaces, with key details such as paintings, furniture, paneling and tiling clearly recorded.
Rossetti's The loving cup (1867) stands prominently in the picture gallery at Dawpool, Thurstaston in Cheshire (visible in image numbers 1 and 2). In the billiard room of Seafield House (image 70) hangs William Watson's Sheep in landscape. A number of other paintings remain to be identified.
The series was presumably compiled for the French market, where cyanotypes enjoyed broader acceptance than in Great Britain, perhaps for Albert Levy, the prominent architectural publisher in Paris and New York.
