Manuscript pattern book of designs, evidently for needlework, comprising floral, nuptial, and other motifs, some incorporating the name (or initials) of Ellen Maria Burnett of Haling Park, Croydon. Almost every leaf in the volume includes multiple patterns, each executed in pen-and-ink, mostly enhanced with ink wash, all drawn on the rectos only. The flyleaf is inscribed: "Ellen Maria Burnett, Haling Park, February 25th 1830." It clearly relates to her upcoming wedding, which the Gentleman's magazine (vol. 101) records as taking place between Ellen Maria, third daughter of Charles Fassett Burnett of Haling Park, Croydon, and Edward B. Meyer of Wilton Crescent, at St. James's on June 2, 1831. Her father Charles Fassett Burnett (1779-1852) was a vinegar maker and distiller at Vauxhall. Her mother, Harriet, née Barons, died in May, 1830, which may explain why the wedding did not take place until the following year.
The designs in the volume give some clue as to its origin. The first 122 leaves of drawings are skillfully executed, employing ink wash, and occasionally featuring Ellen Maria's name or initials. The remaining designs are less assured and feature names of other girls. It may be that the original book was the work of a professional couturier and was presented to Ellen Maria when preparing her trousseau, while those at the end were added either by Ellen Maria herself or a member of her family (she had no less than six sisters). - Subject Terms:
