The full text of the card reads: "Thomas Macdonald, sketch maker & designer, for photographic process & zinco blocks, copper & steel plate engraver, for lithographic, copper-plate & docteur printing, and etcher of pattern grounds for fugitive protection. Monument Buildings, Pudding Lane, London, E.C. Established 1875, to the trade only. Every kind of engraving by secret machinery done on the premises."
Thomas Macdonald was trained as an apprentice to Edinburgh artist and engraver, James McMillan. Establishing his own business in London in 1875, Macdonald specialized in engraved commercial documents, such as die headings, share certificates, and bonds, employing microlettering etc. for protective designs. He was founder of the City of London Engraving Bureau. See: The British printer, vol. 14 (1901), page 102.
