- The Band of Hope Review (1851-1937) was a temperance educational magazine set up by the Methodist reformer Thomas Bywater Smithies.
Bound in original limp linen cloth.
Album of 12 drawings, in pen and black ink, by A.G. Richardson. Tipped-in at the front is an engraved "Certificate of Merit, presented by the Editor of the 'Band of Hope Review', to A.G. Richardson, for Specimens of Drawing. See 'Band of Hope Review' for May, 1862. ... 25th April, 1862." Each of the drawings is signed on the reverse, A.G. Richardson, 2 Grove Street, Holloway. All of the drawings are untitled and undated, and it is possible that they are copies of published works. Subjects include: ladies nursing a boy after a wreck at sea; an infant's ascent up a set of stairs; a young boy returning home; a group of sailors; a woman seated, with large dog; a pair of birds at nest; a boy at prayer, beneath a portrait of John Angell James; a tiger; a fireman, with dog; a young child slumbering, with dog. - Subject Terms:
