Notes:
Sketchbook belonging to an unidentified amateur artist, circa 1900, featuring "Le Messurier's A.B.C. Sketching Frame." The sketching frame is approximately the same size as the sketchbook, so that it may be housed therein, and bears a network of intersecting lengths of black thread, forming a grid of 40 squares. In the corner of the frame is printed: "Reeves & Sons." The front pastedown of the album bears a lithographed illustration of a landscape, with concise instructions on using the frame: "The frame is carried as a leaf in the book. Place the frame on the paper. Mark off the four inside corners and the points ABCD 1234567 all around. Then using the frame rule the cross lines A-A 1-1, &c. To select a sketch, hold the frame with the left hand 12 inches off; look through it with one eye. Fix 2 points XX at the intersection of the threads and mark them off on the paper. To continue the sketch, take care to place the frame first in its proper position with regard to the fixed points."
