Manuscript diary kept by Alfred Putney during a tour of Egypt and Palestine in 1878. The diary is in the form of letters written by Putney to his parents and friends and is illustrated with photographs and a pen-and-ink sketch of the dining table on board ship. Putney departs from the Hotel Burgundy, Paris, March 24, 1878, traveling down to Marseille, where he sails on the steamship Arethuse to Naples, falling into conversation on board with Prince Leopold of Belgium who "journeyed with us to Naples--he is shortly going to Austria on a visit to the Crown Prince.”
Arriving in Alexandria, he next visits Cairo and the pyramids: “I succeeded in climbing to the top of the highest (470 feet) with the aid of three Arabs, two were pulling and one gave me a push up behind; we then visited the chambers in the interior.” His party is joined by the British Consul and moves on to Boulac, Badrashain, Sakara, Heliopolis, and Osmalia. Good Friday finds him sailing to Jaffa and Jerusalem, and touring the Holy Land. The letters conclude on his return to Alexandria prior to departing for Marseille and thence back home. The manuscript is illustrated with photographic portraits of the author, his family, people he meets, including Prince Leopold, as well as their guide at Jerusalem, and dragman at Cairo. There are additional topographical views from engravings, a printed map, and a souvenir card of dried flowers from Jerusalem.
