The underside of the lid bears the embossed paper label of Reeves & Sons Ltd.
Mahogany watercolor paint box, manufactured by Reeves and Sons, London, circa 1880. The box is intact, with original brass hinges and latch. An interior recess at the front of the box, intended for the storage of brushes (etc.), bears a printed paper label: "Reeves' water colour box, no. 16. Made by Reeves & Sons, Ltd. London, England." Above this are four porcelain mixing dishes, inserted into appropriate circular recesses. At back are 10 pigment tablets (in two rows of 5), each color identified in a printed slip affixed below each row. The colors comprise: indigo, vermilion, ultramarine, gamboge, burnt sienna, crimson lake, Vandyke brown, yellow ochre, sepia, and light red. It appears that two of these (gamboge and crimson lake) have been used; the others are untouched, and still bear the stamped image of Britannia.
Also present is a small tube of black watercolor paint and a Winsor and Newton brush ("4, Series S.1, Bristle"), 9.5 cm.
