- Notes:
- The art of paper quillwork (or paper filigree) was most popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries, as a hobby of fashionable and refined young women in Great Britain (and the American colonies). Some contemporary magazines printed patterns for botanical designs and other quillwork compositions. The finished designs comprised narrow strips of colored paper that were rolled, crimped, fluted, or gilded, then arranged in decorative patterns. Advanced paper quillwork designs might also be incorporated into the panels of households objects, such as tea caddies and small pieces of furniture.
Depiction of a flower vase, composed entirely of paper quillwork, in many colors. The design is undated and unsigned. The upper edge of the flower vase is highlighted with gilt paper. The design has a sheet of pale yellow paper as a background, and has been placed in a shallow wood frame, the top cased in glass. - Subject Terms:
