- In the mid-1860s, the Department of Science and Art organized about 90 art schools in Great Britain, and trained art teachers in charge of about 70,000 students. Its goal were twofold: the education of designers, and the shaping of public taste. See: Anderson, David. "New lamps for old: museums in the learning age."
The front of the medal bears an image of Queen Victoria, encircled by the motto: "Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen, MDCCCLVI." The back of the medal bears the text: "Local prize for success in art awarded by the Department of Science and Art." On the rim of the medal: "Edward Fitch, London, District 'St. Martin's' Stage 23C.
The medal is accompanied by its original hinged box, in maroon roan, with small brass clasps. The box top is stamped in gilt with the royal crown and the text "Science and Art Department." The interior of the box is lined with silk. - Subject Terms:
