Snelgrove, D. British sporting and animal prints.
Autograph manuscript for Thomas Henry Taunton's Portraits of celebrated racehorses of the past and present centuries (published: London, S. Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1887-1888), apparently in the author's hand throughout, together with a collection of 154 prints (45 of which are hand-colored) of the racehorses. The volume lacks prints for about 20 of the horses described therein. The index leaf at front is captioned: "The prints of horses in this book were collected at very great cost and trouble, and their performances recorded therein, with much labour, by Thomas Henry Taunton, in 1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, & 1876." There are minor differences between the manuscript and published versions of the text. In places, the manuscript includes slightly more information; elsewhere, the manuscript omits information included in the published version.
The index lists 165 racehorses described in the album. Also at front is a short essay titled "A dream of bygone St. Legers, September 6th, 1876." The volume may have been compiled to commemorate the centenary of the St. Leger Stakes (1876). The plates include aquatints, lithographs, mezzotints, and stipple engravings (many of which are referenced in Snelgrove). A complete list of all the plates is available upon request. Artists (and engravers or lithographers) prominently featured include: Harry Hall, Charles Hancock, John Harris, J.F. Herring, Charles Hunt, Richard Gilson Reeve, Francis Sartorius, George Stubbs, George Townley Stubbs, and Thomas Sutherland.
Also laid in is an excerpt from the Illustrated London News of June 4, 1932, of which p. 921 features an illustration and note on Johann Zoffany's portrait of Colonel Dennis O'Kelly, and p. 922 an illustration and note on George Stubbs's Portrait of Eclipse.
